Ling Jian Solo Exhibition Foreword

2010.12.22

Mr. Ling Jian has traveled and lived in Europe for many years, through which has kept an open vision reflexive of “reality of imageries” in his creative practice. On the other hand, his creativity also projects a response in an imagery abundance era in contemporary Chinese art.

It is difficult for artists to maintain independent thinking and a critical spirit. Not only should the artist reflect upon traditional culture, but also be aware and alert of popular culture. As a contemporary artist, Ling Jian has maintained a critical

distance towards both traditional and popular culture throughout his practice as art becomes increasingly image driven. At the same time, Ling is concerned with maintaining a certain level of contemporary cultural interests, and it is quite clear from his proposal in Moon in Glass, the artist has strengthened execution and transcendence of cultural interests since the beginning of his artistic practice, who artfully appropriated visual symbols from traditional culture, which not only highlighted the cultural contexts of his creativity, but also reflects upon the artist’s understanding in both ideologies of time and contemporaneity.

Ling Jian’s use of various materials led to the visual success of this exhibition. The exhibition consists of ten paintings installed with crystals, that brings the audience to a dreamy state of ideals. Through the materialistic mentality of the general public, the artist projects a crass aesthetic pretentiousness and the assumed attitudes towards it – thus achieving a deconstruction of historical culture and the dispelling of its so-called meaning.
